About the Artist

I'm Karma Kitaj, encaustic and mixed media artist. Encaustic is an ancient form of painting, having survived over millennia. About the Artwork

This painting was created with many layers of beeswax, pigmented alcohol inks and shellac which were burned in with a torch, + spray paint. The greyish background of wax shows some of the unevenness associated with burning each layer of wax to let it adhere to the layer beneath. The platform is 1/2" birch plywood. It needs no framing.

Curator's Review

Searching for harmony in innocuous places, Karma allows herself to be guided by patterns that appear in each layer of wax beneath the surface of her works. The artist looks for inspiration in the areas of her paintings that would generally be appreciated only as background or texture, a part of the thing rather than the thing itself. By elevating these patterns, by making them more than a piece of the whole, Karma enters a new territory that plays perfect host to her artistic vision. She focuses on exploring the unknown.
She imbues her canvases with a sense of atmospheric light, an ethereal, almost achingly nostalgic sense of transcendence. That is quite rare in contemporary abstraction. The result is a work that is both beautiful and accessible.
